England defender makes solid debut as City beat Wolves 2-0

Marc Guéhi has revealed that conversations with England teammates Phil Foden and John Stones were instrumental in convincing him to join Manchester City from Crystal Palace in a £20 million transfer completed in mid-January.

The 25-year-old defender made his full debut for City in Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Wolves, completing the most passes (98) and touches (115) of any player in his team barring Rodri. Guéhi signed a five-and-a-half-year contract worth close to £300,000-per-week after City moved quickly to address their defensive injury crisis.

Solid Debut Performance

Manager Pep Guardiola thanked the club hierarchy for securing Guéhi’s signature, noting that the deal was only possible due to the short time remaining on the defender’s Palace contract. The England international was set to become a free agent in the summer, prompting City to act quickly.

“We’ve been talking for quite a while and obviously talked with different clubs,” said Guéhi. “I felt from conversations, through talking with some of the players here, that this was the place for me to improve, to get better, and just to help as much as possible.”

Significant Investment

Guéhi becomes City’s second January signing following the £64 million capture of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, taking their 12-month transfer spending to £445.9 million on 15 players. The double swoop addresses City’s attacking and defensive needs as they chase silverware on multiple fronts.

The England international was previously close to joining Liverpool last summer for £35 million before the move collapsed on deadline day. Crystal Palace felt unable to refuse City’s offer with Guéhi set to become a free agent in just five months.

Immediate Availability Key

The most important attribute Guéhi offers Manchester City, at least in the short term, is availability. He has started 32 out of 34 games this season and only 10 outfield players have played more Premier League minutes since the start of last term.

With senior centre-backs John Stones, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol sidelined due to injury, Guéhi’s experience and reliability provide crucial cover for Guardiola’s depleted backline. His arrival strengthens City’s squad for both immediate challenges and long-term ambitions.
